4 TIPS FOR EXCAVATOR MAINTENANCE

by IronClad Company

EXCAVATOR MAINTENANCE

Routine excavator maintenance promotes better equipment performance. It also reliably extends equipment lifecycle, increases uptime, and promotes higher return on your investment. As a side bonus, a well-maintained excavator helps improve the moral of the operators. Everyone prefers fault-free construction equipment. Help your operators keep focus on production rather than repair.

The following tips will help you develop a comprehensive equipment maintenance plan.

  • Check the Fluids:

Checking the fluids in your excavator should be a daily occurrence. This includes checking levels of coolant, engine oil, and hydraulic fluid. If any of these fluids are low, make sure to refill them as soon as possible. Check the manual to see if the manufacturer recommends a certain brand, and if they do, use it. Keep these areas clean as well to avoid any contamination.

  • Filters:

Excavators have various filters for fuel, engine, air, and hydraulic systems. They may have different service intervals, but it's still important to check them frequently for any debris that may have accumulated. Using an excavator with dirty filters can directly impact the level of performance and put sensitive parts at risk of being damaged. You should also know that while it may feel intuitive to change the filter before it's time, your filter should not be removed until the full required time has passed to avoid contamination.

  • Cooling system:

Maintaining your excavator's cooling system is crucial to avoid overheating and further damage. You should consistently check the airflow throughout the system and check the coolant hoses for any leaks. The oil cooler, condenser, and radiator should be cleaned with low-pressure air or water, but extra caution should be taken to not damage the fins of the radiator.

  • Track:

The track of the excavator is constantly being stressed. That's why it's important to examine the tracks on a daily basis to look for any signs of stress such as cuts, tears, or areas where exposed steel is visible. Any perforations can let in moisture, which can cause further damage.
